Embracing the Baldrige Framework for Quality Professional Development
Whether your organization is new, growing, or has existed for many years, it faces daily and long-term challenges. Many organizations have registered to ISO QMS and comply to regulated industry standards and requirements; others have adopted lean principles, statistical process control, Six Sigma, agile, etc., to drive continuous improvement seeking operational excellence.
The Baldrige Framework helps you answer three questions about the organization:
1. Is your organization doing as well as it needs to?
2. How do you know?
3. What, how and where should your organization improve or change?
The Baldrige Excellence Framework and its Criteria for Organizational Performance Excellence incorporates proven practices on current leadership and management issues into a set of questions that help organizations rise to the challenges, leverage their strengths, and manage all the components of the organization as a unified whole to achieve its mission, vision, purpose, success, and performance excellence. This view of an organization is called a Systems Perspective.
This presentation will introduce the Baldrige Framework and Criteria for organizational performance excellence, discuss the WIIFM for Quality professionals, briefly compare Baldrige to ISO, and discuss the role of PDCA and Lean Six Sigma in performance excellence.
Robert "QualityBob" Mitchell
Our presenter
Robert “QualityBob” Mitchell is the Executive Director for Southwest Alliance for Excellence (SWAE.org). SWAE is a nonprofit organization chartered to administer the Baldrige Framework in Arizona, Nevada, and Utah. It is one of 29 state and regional programs that administer the Baldrige Framework across all 50 States.
Bob is also the Immediate Past Chair of the ASQ Phoenix Section and is currently serving as their Nominating Chair, Voice of Customer Chair, and Section Mentor. Prior to “retiring” to Arizona in 2015, Bob also served as the ASQ Minnesota Section Chair, the ASQ Statistics Division Chair, the ASQ CEO Roundtable, and is recognized as a “Global Voice for Quality” influencer. Bob is a Fellow of ASQ and holds and teaches ASQ professional certifications for CQA, CQE, and CMQ/OE. In May 2024, Bob was awarded ASQ’s highest recognition for volunteers, the “Distinguished Service Medal for Lifetime Achievement”.
He has 39 years of experience and expertise in Product Development, Quality Engineering, Quality Assurance, Quality Control, Process Development, Statistical Consulting, Strategic Planning & Deployment, and Quality Manager for several 3M business units, including 3M Post-it® brand products and Sr. Quality Manager for 3M Corporate Quality & Lean Six Sigma Operations.
Bob began his personal journey with the Baldrige Criteria in the late 1990s when 3M Dental Products Division won the 1997 National Quality Award for organizational performance excellence. He is a Baldrige Examiner, ISO Lead Auditor, and Lean Six Sigma Champion.
